Challenges
We have been talking through some stuff at work recently and as a result of this I thought that I might pose a question to you all.

What are the big challenges in your day. That is what is the single biggest challenge that face both at work/in business and personally/at home. I guess the idea behind the entire process if that if we can identify the single biggest issues that we have then can and are more likely to do something about them.

There are more questions involved in the whole process but I thought if we started here then those of us who decided that it might be a worthwhile exercise to engage in we could move on from this point and take a little bit of a journey.

So to start the ball rolling my biggest challenge at work, is trying to juggle the requirements of the three businesses i am involved in, while trying to develop new strategies and directions and still maintain firstly quality time with my family especially Lex and be able to spend time with those other people whose company I enjoy or who enjoy mine.

My biggest challenge outside of work (and achieveing the blance between work and home) is I think my weight. Those of you who know me know that I used to be much heavier than what i am now, then when in adelaide lost a lot of the weight and then when back here put some of it back on again and now finally am begining to come back down again.

Well there goes I have made a start, if any of you want to contribute and as I said come for a bit of a journey of exploration with me that would be great if not that is fine to.

The long night to success.

I have been thinking about work and success and luck recently after an acquaintance of mine suggested that I was very lucky to be doing a job that I love and to be successful at it and how it all seemed to have happened so quickly.

I thought about it for a few moments and I realised that often people use the concept of luck or or of overnight success to compensate for their own lack of achievement, motivation and drive.  The concept of overnight success is one that I have a great amount of difficulty with, again I often hear people talk about how someone was in the right place at the right time, heard the right rumour, invested at the right time, for  them to become an overnight success.  I am not sure that there are any overnight success's though, take myself for example, if I am an overnight success then it has been a very long night; either 20 odd years or about 10 depending on where you decide to suggest the journey to here started.   I certainly could not have got to where I am not without my nine years of university, or my various jobs, or people that I have met or interacted with, all of these things and many others as well have all lead me to where I am today, have molded me into the person that I am today.  Any success that I have achieved to this point in my life is a function of everything that has gone previously, not only my success's but my failures as well, and the further success I will achieve will of course evolve from this point onwards.

There really is I think no luck in this world (except for Lotto) that we do not make ourselves.  There is no point in complaining or suggestions that things have gone wrongly for us and that this has caused problems.  Everything that happens to us is  a result of the things that have come before.  This is not to suggest that I am a fatalist or I believe in a deterministic universe, nor do I believe that things can not be changed.  All that I am saying is that where we are now is a result of what has happened in our past and how we have reacted and still react to those incidents.

We have all of the power in our lives, it is us who chooses how it is we are going to react to any thing that happens, we can change the things that happen around us by simply changing the way we react to it or the way in which we perceive it.

Well wasnt yesterday interesting
As most of you know I have had a bit of a sinus and ear infection for the last little while. Imagine my surprise when I woke up Sunday morning and the right sideof my face no longer worked. By this is mean when I smile and laugh only the left side of my face moves the right side tends to stay where it is. We had the mild panic for a while of 'has paul had a stroke' but general hand and leg movability as well as aiblityt o speak and read seemed to rule this out. Went about day thinking all would come good, when by lunchtime it had not, after consultation with the learned one (museumnut) I went to the hospital. Now the QLD public hospital service has take a bit of a battering recently, however after yestereday i have nothign but praise for them. I walked into emergency, spoke briefly to a lovely nurse, who casually directed me to the admin girl who took my details and pointed me back to the nurse who said, 'come right in mr rasmussen' Straight to a cubicle, into a gown and very quicky becoming the centre of attention. It turns out i have Bell's Palsy a relatively about 1 in 5000 condition (well actually it is classified as an event because it is temporary and in general self correcting. However due to the fact that diagnosis of Bell's is by exclusion and the other main candidate for my symptoms is of cause micro stroke, i got every test under the sun and felt a little like i was on the set of house.

The older nurse and the register knoew what was going on almost straight away, (however still have to go through all the tests) however due to relative rarity, none of the residents had ever encountered a case before, so under strict instructions from the registrar not to tell them anything a procession of young doctors came along and questioned and probed (not that sort of probed) to see whether they could manage a diagnosis.

The upshot is for the next few days to few weeks the right side of my face is not really working. It is not painful anyting like that just slightly disconcerting particularly when i laugh (you imagine laughing when only half your face moves) so if I appear to be sneering at you a lot of the time it is probably just me smiling (well maybe)

Surreality again
This week certainly has turned out to be somewhat surreal yet again, my life it seems is currently one that really does possess a certain surreal quality to it these days.
Tuesday left home at 4.45
Board plane for Emerald 5.30
arrive Emerald 7.00
drive towards Moranbah (shudders slightly)
150km into the drive this and I spend 30 minutes driving very slowly
through 500+ cattle being herded along the road.
Approaching Moranbah find FM radio sation
Playing what I think is possibly one of the best collections of early eighties
alternative and goth music and it turns out to be Moranbah FM
Moranbah - WOW
All of the motels are owned by Chinese people therefore there are 7 chinese resturants on main (read pretty much only) road into the town. The only other food choices are the pub where you kinda have to pick the teeth and blood out of your steak before you eat it or KFC (guess u would be right there GUP) or Red Rooster.

Wed and Thursday - Spend day at Saraji Mine site training people.

Thurdays night fly back to Brisbane.

Friday - back at work open emails

Invited to lunch with CEO's, Director General's and Executive Directors of organisations such as Brisbane Airport, State Development and innovation, and the Turf Club.

See now you undersatnd why I feel kinda surreal

pixies
For those of you who are not aware, one of the bands, that bands like Nirvana, pearl Jam and numerous others claim as being seminal in the development of their music, namely THE PIXIES are touring Australia as part of the V festival. They will be playing as part of the festival on the Gold Coast on april 1. Now i understand that some of you will think this is a really advanced aprils fools joke, however it is not.

They are touring. Looks like tickets for the gig will be about 110-125 per ticket, but man it is the Pixies, as well as the petshops boys and numerous other, and I say again what will your one and only chance to get to see, THE PIXIES.

How to create a headache
I hae just discovered how much of aheadache it is to try and develop a training program for a process and program that no-one who actually has to work with wants to have anything to do with. Welcome to the world of document management ewwwwww. I have just spent the last three hours trying to elicit from various organisations that we work with what their policies are with respect to definitions of and responsibility for corporate information. Now given that this stuff is now legally required for all government and quasi government organisations, they must have not only the policies developed but also plans in place for the acquisition and implimentation of programs and porcedures in relation to DM, it is stunning that so many of them are so woefully disorganised. Not that I should be surprised by the fact that these organisations are disorganised, hell i work with most of them on a daily basis but still there are times when you shake your head and go how the hell did you people get to in charge.

But then I remember the money and that makes it alright.

Having a good day
nah really I am

I am a little disturbed by this.
Dictator- ENTJ
60% Extraversion, 60% Intuition, 86% Thinking, 80% Judging
Have you no soul? It's clear you have no heart and that your blood runs cold, but really, do you have even one redeeming factor?

Sure. You're a natural born leader. So was Hitler. You just don't like people, do you?

You don't play games. You take charge. And there's very little room for mistakes in your world. You're forceful, intimidating and overbearing.

Heard of the word "patience?" Trust me, it's a word and it's something you're sorely lacking. Believe it or not, you're not always right. Learn to have some patience for those who think differently from you, knobflap.

From the way people's knees knock when they see you, you should have realised by now that you're not exactly a "people-person." You're more of a "people-eater." You just ain't tuned into people's feelings and probably couldn't care less whether you were anyway. Maybe you're not from this planet but the rest of us are.

Sure, you're intelligent. So what? You have some semblance of power. Big deal.

At least people LIKE the rest of us.

Not New Years Resolutions
I am not one to make New Years Resolutions, however I am a firm believer in goal setting and the need to have plan in order to be able to achieve things. To this end I have decided to do a couple of things. The first is to post a bit of a list of the things that I hope to achieve, not this year, but hopefull within the next six months, I like definate dates so by my birthday I will have achieved the list the follows.

1. Get my bodyfat percentage down to around 10% I would be happy with 15% but I would like 10 better.

2. Have the piece of paper that legitimises my Dr Rasmussen Status :) in my hot little hand.

3. Be consistently smoke free. (This permits the occassional social cig, but nothing more.)

4. Have my RPL's done for my diploma of workplace training and education.

5. Spend as much quality time with partner and family as I can, and never forget exactly how important they are to me.

6. Get bookshelves (this one is for you Lexi :) )

7. Try and be less vocally citical of people and things: this way I can still have my loathing, but it means that the rest of you are not going to have to put up with rant abouts things like for example 'I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair'

8. Help my friends and those around me to be the best people that they can be, to achieve that their goals and get as much out of life as they can.

There is some other stuff that I really would like to get done by my birthday, however most of them are still a little fluid and formative so they may have to wait until I have a firmer grip on them and make some updates to this thing.

So there is the list, or at least the formative list at this stage. so why have I done this well two reasons, first goals are easier to keep if you make them public, it to some extent puts pressure on you to achieve them or at least keeps them where they need to be, clearly in the centre of your vision.

The other reason is that I want to encourage all of you to do the same, give it some thought, make a list it doesnt have to be as big as mine, it might only be one thing that you want to achieve, one thing that will make a difference in your life. Just think about it, decide what you want and how you are going to get it, then post it here, let me and everyone else know and we can all make sure that we all get what we want out of 2007.

Current Mood: optimistic

Traffic - also posted in Tesric's journal
Yes yesterday was a fuck up. One of those days when my regime of walking home feels soooo much more productive, especailly when it involves walking past crowded busstops and scowling people in cars (sorry tes I do feel for you) what amazes me however is the fact that people did not in anyway change their plans to get to work this morning. I got on the bus and the whole bus, with the exception of myself and the lovely older lady who i sat next to was pissed off because they were late, mobile phones were being madly thumbed to send apologies and i am late messages. WHAT did these people think that this was going to have no effect on their lives what so fucking ever. One stupid girl in her early twenties even said, Oh I thought it would be fixed by now - i mean fuck what part of crack in the freeway and closed indefinately did she not understand. Fortunatley this comment bought giggles to both myself and the lady next to me and when the girl glared at us, the lady even said the following and I quote "What, it is not my fault if you are to stupid to check the news in the morning dearie" At which point I almost shat myself with laughter.

Man there are some days when I just love my life.
(actually I am lying I love my life everyday.)

Have fun in the traffic folks and remember its not your fault if you can blame somewhen else.

weekend and stuff
Well it has been a little while since i posted, mainly because i am busy ergo no time to post, I see most of you on a regular basis ergo you know what is happening, I dont necessarily think that everyone needs to know everything I am doing ergo I dont post that often, which come to think of it is what i said originally. Anyhow, flew to Rockhampton for training last wednesday and thursday hmmmmmm

Rockhampton: nice place (not) and i sure as hell wouldn't want to live there. For fucks sake the main road was covered in ground in cow shit, how hick can you get. That being said the hotel was nice, the few people i spoke too (including the people I trained) were not horrid and I did manage to get a steak the size of my head and an inch thick for under $30 with beer batter fries and salad, along with a pint of Guiness for $4.50. So therefore Rockhampton is not all that bad.

Weekend: Not too much to report except for the following, The beer is in the vat and is fermenting alone nicely. It will be ready for transfer to bottles by about the middle of next week (Then I can start the next brew) My paln is to basically keep the barrel full until around christmas time to build up a bit of a supply. I think that laying down about 40 bottles every 10 days or so should manage to keep me in booze for christmas. So that being said we are probably looking at a mid november testng party on this first batch to see how things have gone. Will keep you all informed.
Also I may actually be in need of beer bottles, if you have any and this whole brewing thing takes off I may take them off your hands.

Fuck it thats enough

Have fun

Catch you all later
